National Caregivers Day– February 18, 2022

National Caregivers Day is observed on the 3rd Friday in February– on February 18 this year. The day honors people who selflessly provide personal care, and physical- and emotional support to those who require it most. There are various kinds of caregivers who are not simply limited to the health sector. The types are: household caregiver, expert caregiver, independent caregiver, private responsibility caretaker, and casual caretaker. Some of them are not always paid, which is why it is necessary to appreciate and thank them for their long-lasting commitment.

HISTORY OF NATIONAL CAREGIVERS DAY
Caregivers really go the mile in supplying the essentials and necessities, from medical aid to individual grooming. Regardless of this, they are under-appreciated and typically underpaid, or not paid at all. For this reason, the Providers Association for Home Health & Hospice Agencies, PAHHHA, established the 3rd Friday in February as National Caregivers Day in 2015. They aimed to dedicate a day each year to recognize and appreciate caregivers all over. PAHHHA likewise supplies resources that enable others to extend gratitude to the caregivers in their lives. The first event of the vacation happened in 2016.

According to a report by the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index, caregivers invest 6 days in a month grooming, feeding, dressing, bathing, and strolling, 13 days a month commuting, cleansing, doing the laundry, keeping an eye on shopping, medication, and cooking unique meals for their client. Moreover, 13 hours a month are invested coordinating visits with doctors, looking into illness and symptoms, and managing financial resources.

The National Alliance for Caregiving and American Association of Retired Persons reports that, in 2020, an estimated 53 million caregivers in the U.S. took care of an adult or kid without earning money for it. While a lot of caregivers tend to one adult, roughly 15% care for two adults, and 3% look after three or more grownups. The Institute on Aging reports that over 3/4 of caregivers are female who spend 50% more time offering necessary services than males.

But who will care for the caregivers? What’s surprising is that lots of caregivers are elders themselves, and the number of hours they spend caregiving just increases with time. The typical age of caregivers caring for a person 65 years or older is 63 years old! Much of them report having bad health themselves.

We think the special kindness and perseverance of caregivers should be celebrated year-round. Their value is particularly honored on National Caregivers Day when we need to be there for them just as they are there for our enjoyed ones.
