We come together to commemorate Harmony Day on 21 March. Developed in 1999 to celebrate unity and diversity, Harmony Day was initially an Australian celebration but is now significant around the world by diligent residents. Whether you wish to be better pals with your neighbors or stand in the shoes of another, we have actually got some unified habits and unifying concepts to make your Harmony Day an image of peace.

HISTORY OF HARMONY DAY
Harmony Day was first commemorated in Australia in 1999, however its roots return hundreds of years. In 2017, researchers published evidence in the journal “Nature” that the ancestors of Aboriginal Australians landed there from Southeast Asia about 65,000 years earlier. Nobody understands exactly how they arrived, and although the range was shorter than it is today due to big expanses of frozen water, some hypothesize that they still needed to undertake a sea trip of at least 45 miles, perhaps, according to the Australian Museum, in rafts made from bamboo! These first inhabitants were the initial native Australians and lived in harmony with the land for centuries.

In 1788, the British Empire reached Australia, landing at Botany Bay to establish a penal colony of exiled prisoners. The British used the Australian land to duplicate their own Western civilization, a culture that did not work in harmony with that of the indigenous individuals of Australia and led to a mass massacre of individuals who had occupied the land for hundreds of years.

As a result, as the nation grew, Australia (like many nations) was a divided society. In the late 20th century, regardless of the legislation preserving equal rights for all, lots of people still suffered from racist attacks. In 1998, after activists condemned the country for persistently disregarding to its bigotry, the Australian federal government commissioned a study into the nature of bigotry over the last years. The research study highlighted a greater requirement for people to ‘live in harmony’ and, as a result, Harmony Day was developed to encourage everyone to appreciate each other and value the nation’s multicultural background.

Whilst Harmony Day is still primarily an Australian holiday, individuals celebrate it worldwide by assessing the ways they can live in harmony with their neighbors, regardless of their background or circumstances. The communities themselves choose how they wish to celebrate, with over 55,000 Harmony Day events held since the celebration’s birth.
