People who are really serious about software should make their own hardware.
Biology is the most powerful technology ever created. DNA is software, protein are hardware, cells are factories.
It’s hardware that makes a machine fast. It’s software that makes a fast machine slow.
Software comes from heaven when you have good hardware.
I call myself the hardware shelf. There’s a lot of awards and honors there. And I have earned that. I didn’t ask for it, I didn’t beg for it, I didn’t pay for it. I earned that. People see the accomplishments – but it’s good to remind people that so much strife and labor and tears and heartbreak came before that, that it really is earned.
People usually compare the computer to the head of the human being. I would say that hardware is the bone of the head, the skull. The semiconductor is the brain within the head. The software is the wisdom. And data is the knowledge.
We collectively, to get things done, work together as a team. Because the work really happens horizontally in our company, not vertically. Products are horizontal. It takes hardware plus software plus services to make a killer product.
Behind every small business, there’s a story worth knowing. All the corner shops in our towns and cities, the restaurants, cleaners, gyms, hair salons, hardware stores – these didn’t come out of nowhere.
The fellow that owns his own home is always just coming out of a hardware store.
Even more amazing than modern technology is our opportunity to access information directly from Heaven, without hardware, software, or monthly service fees.
Russell M. Nelson
Reading computer manuals without the hardware is as frustrating as reading sex manuals without the software.
Arthur C. Clarke
People will buy hardware just to buy a single game if the game is really compelling.
Windows is probably the most important product in the entire PC industry. Everything we do in terms of supporting touch, new hardware, accessibility has incredible impact.
You can mass-produce hardware; you cannot mass-produce software – you cannot mass-produce the human mind.
There’s no other company that could make a MacBook Air and the reason is that not only do we control the hardware, but we control the operating system. And it is the intimate interaction between the operating system and the hardware that allows us to do that. There is no intimate interaction between Windows and a Dell notebook.
Fingerprint readers require special hardware, and a lot of people find them creepy and don’t want to use them. Smart cards and tokens can be lost or stolen.
I went to a state school in Christchurch, New Zealand, and then straight on to the University of Canterbury. But I worked part-time all the way through high school: first with a paper round, then at a fast-food outlet, a video store and a hardware store.
The voice I use is a very old hardware speech synthesizer made in 1986. I keep it because I have not heard a voice I like better and because I have identified with it.
A more worldly and competent foreign and defence policy is by far the preferred first line of defence – rather than the default position of relying on expensive but problematic hardware.
I’m a mechanical engineer, and I grew up on a farm, so I like practical hardware – somebody’s elegant solution that proves itself over the long term.
Apple is the only company that can take hardware, software, and services and integrate those into an experience that’s an ‘aha’ for the customer. You can take that and apply to markets that we’re not in today.
Hardware works best when it matters the least.
Norman Ralph Augustine
In the 1950s in Columbia, South Carolina, it was considered OK for kids to play with weird things. We could go to the hardware store and buy 100 feet of dynamite fuse.
People don’t realize how much it means to your music to record on tape, whether it be for new music or old music. People don’t realize how much or how imperative it is to use actual hardware when making drums because those are actual percussion samplers. They’re hardware instruments that are made to have the drum hit.
When I take on a design project, I have to jet from the bookstore to the hardware shop to the lamp store and back again just to collect a small portion of the many items I need to fill a home. But, when you hit the flea market, they’re all right there. From booth to booth, you have the bases covered.
We need to get smarter about hardware and software innovation in order to get the most value from the emerging Internet of Things.
The goal for us to do with Squanchtendo is to approach all of our projects with a goal of adding interesting characters, personality, and a story to interact with in-game. Every game we make will be built from the ground up for whatever hardware it will launch on.
Since Star Wars, that film’s success led to bigger budgets, more hardware, that the great movies like the ones I did, which were studio movies, are now independent movies. They range from half a million to several million, and a lot of those have very interesting roles.
A hardware startup with a lot of funding and a lot of momentum has a lot less risk.
People think of Apple as a maker of excellent premium hardware. In fact, many reviewers regard Apple devices as the best you can buy.
People tend to look at processing power as how to gauge a piece of hardware is powerful for us.
Brushes are crucial for applying glazes, sauces, and oils. The pastry brushes that you find in homestores can be pricey so pay a visit to your local hardware store and pick up a few paint brushes which are less expensive and work equally as well.
We run the programs, and we support them through all of our folks, but usually the hardware is somewhere else.
If I won the lottery I’d start a charity that helped little family hardware stores, cobblers and fruit shops open in city centres.
I think ‘Shark Tank’ is targeting companies that are really trying to raise their very first dollar. A lot of them aren’t really tech focused. We’re definitely going after companies that are building real technology, either software or hardware, they probably have raised a couple hundred thousand already.
I used to love going into local hardware stores, to look at little things they made locally. Nowadays it’s harder, though you can still do it in Vietnam.
Francis Ford Coppola
A computer, by definition, cannot be held accountable for anything because there is no mechanism to hold it to account, short of turning off the electricity supply or destroying the hardware. Only humans can be accountable.
There’s three things that you need for virtual reality to work. You need the hardware that’s affordable and doesn’t make people sick, you need an audience that is willing to pay for it, and you need the content.
My family originally lived in Brooklyn. Our first apartment was a little place above my father and uncle’s hardware store in Coney Island. Now, don’t get the impression that we were surrounded by merry-go-rounds, roller coasters and Ferris wheels. Nope, this was a little side street.
Having a hardware development team in-house is a major strength.
Geeks run the world. Condoleezza Rice is a geek, Bill Gates is clearly a geek, many of the big filmmakers and writers are geeks, lots of military people are geeks. Anyone who has heard Donald Rumsfeld talk about military hardware knows they are in the presence of a geek.
When I was quite young, she was working in a hardware store, so I grew up knowing about hardware.
A geek is a guy who has everything going for him but he’s just too young. He’s got the software but he doesn’t have the hardware yet.
Cloud computing offers individuals access to data and applications from nearly any point of access to the Internet, offers businesses a whole new way to cut costs for technical infrastructure, and offers big computer companies a potentially giant market for hardware and services.
General Atomics, the progenitor of General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, started life in 1955 when a major military contractor, General Dynamics, feared that the military hardware market might dry up. It began exploring peacetime uses of atomic energy, but abandoned the effort when cold-war military spending took off.
I think people should be proud of the work they do, whatever it is. I have this other arty side that loves creating homes. I can be happy going to the hardware store.
In designing hardware to be used every day, it was important to keep both the human aspects and the machine in mind. What looks good also often feels good.
I have a very difficult time describing my music. Because I run into people in the hardware store and they go, ‘Oh, you’re a musician. So what kind of music do you play?’ And I go, ‘Uh, I’ve been doin’ this for many years – I don’t know what to call it.’
Whether you are a consumer, a hardware maker, a software developer or a provider of cool new services, it’s hard to make a move in the American cellphone world without the permission of the companies that own the pipes.
Great graphics requires more than just high-performance hardware. Gamers know software is just as important.
When we get the final hardware, the performance is just going to skyrocket.
With bundled machines you can throw away the hardware and keep the software, and it’s still a good buy.
Apple is all-in on Apple hardware and still wants you to be all-in, too.
If you look at the history of technology gadget makers, hardware makers, it’s littered with the corpses of Palm and RIM and companies like that.
Android phones are sold by dozens of hardware makers, the biggest being Samsung, Motorola, and HTC. There are lots of different form factors. Slider phones. Phones with keyboards. Big screens, small screens, midsize screens.
I don’t care much about hardware. Nintendo games are some of the best games in the world, and from a more graphical standpoint, the Wii can’t do what a PS3 or 360 can do.
We need a wireless mobile device ecosystem that mirrors the PC/Internet ecosystem, one where the consumers’ purchase of network capacity is separate from their purchase of the hardware and software they use on that network. It will take government action, or some disruptive technology or business innovation, to get us there.
Apple’s advantage is that it designs and builds software together, so if the software isn’t excellent, it does the superlative hardware a disservice.
Arguably Apple’s least successful core hardware product in decades, the Apple Watch could have been nursed along, like a terminal patient.
The iPod wasn’t the first MP3 player. Nor were the iPhone and iPad the first in their categories. The real reason for the success of these devices – the true unsung hero at Apple – is the iTunes software and iTunes Store. Because Apple provided them, it wasn’t just selling hardware.
Our lives and our culture have been significantly changed and improved by hardware, software, and services developed by immigrants.
The manufacture and running of all the world’s computers, the toxicity of the hardware mountains that we currently dump on other countries; all this can be totted up on the environmental account of web-users and its authors.
One day I decided to go to a hardware store – I picked up six pieces of wood, a hammer and nails, and built a box. It probably sounded useless at the time but its taken me to where I am today, and its been well received from drummers and percussionists like Josh Devine from One Direction and Robbie Williams drummer.
If you don’t have content, you don’t sell hardware. We need a suite of content of really fun, compelling experiences that aren’t just hardcore game-oriented, and when that’s good enough, it’ll be an easy decision to go to the consumer market.
People who are more than casually interested in computers should have at least some idea of what the underlying hardware is like. Otherwise the programs they write will be pretty weird.
I get double-takes at the hardware store. I’ve had people say, ‘I didn’t know you did this.’ With a celebrity, if folks don’t see you, they think all you do is stay in the house.
I do shop online! But I’m shopping online mostly in the home categories – One Kings Lane and Gilt. At a lot of architectural websites, I buy a lot of hardware for cabinetry like hinges and things like that from England. So, you know, for me, I shop at Net-A-Porter, but I don’t really shop that much for clothing online.
Companies that pretend to care about music and really care about other things – whether it be hardware, whether it be advertising – and now they look at music as a loss leader. And we know music isn’t a loss leader; music is an important part of our lives.
By 1988, I’m seeing this commercial phenomenon beginning to show up. Hardware makers are selling routers to universities so they can build up their campus networks. So I remember thinking, ‘Well, how are we going to get this in the hands of the general public?’ There were no public Internet services at that point.
If I’m not using something, I tend to sell it and move on, so I’m not too sentimental about hardware synths.
Oneohtrix Point Never
When you look at this and where it’s all going, the hardware business requires a lot of investment. It’s very hard, it’s very expensive, and ramping up hard on any given platform, whether it’s a console or any kind of PC or mobile device, going into the hardware business requires a lot of investment.
In a biological system, the software builds its own hardware, but design is critical, and if you start with digital information, it has to be really accurate.
Hillary Clinton’s Russian re-set policy gave Moscow permission to go from privately challenging U.S. foreign policy to publicly moving military hardware into Syria to prop up Bashar al-Assad and annexing Crimea from Ukraine. And Donald Trump seems to support the idea that Putin will be Putin. It’s enough to leave America’s allies confused.
As a boy, I was deeply interested in scientific ideas, electrical and mechanical, and I read almost everything I could find on the subject. I was attracted more by the hardware and construction aspects than by the scientific issues.
My next thing could be something in hardware. It’s never been easier to turn bits into atoms.
Antonio Garcia Martinez
Rank does not intimidate hardware. Neither does the lack of rank.
Norman Ralph Augustine
Apple makes great hardware. The reality is, in the OS, we see things differently.
B. Kevin Turner
I would not say that female cosmonauts are not welcomed in the Russian space program. I must say, however, that all spaceflight hardware, including spacesuits and spacecraft comfort assuring systems, were designed mostly by men and for men.
We have lost one shuttle for every 57 flights and that is not a good ratio. I do believe we need to continue space flights, but maybe we can follow the example of the Russians and use unmanned vehicles to transport hardware into space.
Booksellers are tied to publishing – they need conventional publishing models to continue – but for those companies, that’s not the case. Amazon is an infrastructure company; Apple sells hardware; Google is really an advertising company. You can’t afford as a publisher to have those companies control your route to market.
The hardware manufacturers, game designers, cable companies and computer companies and, in fact, film studios are going to ensure that this thing marches on. They know that they are going to make an enormous amount of money from it.
It wasn’t until the Apple Macintosh that people understood what true hardware-software integration was about. It took one company to line it up: low-cost hardware, cool graphics, third-party products built on top of it, in an all-in-one attractive package that was accessible to consumer marketing.
What we believe is going to be very important is the delivery of traditional software and services and hardware over the Net. That’s a form of electronic marketplace.
Louis V. Gerstner, Jr.
If it weren’t for Moore’s law changing the playing field continuously, I would have been long gone. The rapid pace of hardware evolution still keeps things fresh for me.
United Bank Card, I picked that name in 1999 because it sounded like an established financial institution, and I was 16 years old in my parents’ basement, so I needed a name like that. The moment we started building our own hardware and software and had our point-of-sale capabilities by 2008, that was the last message we wanted to send.
I think it’s very comforting for people to put me in a box. ‘Oh, she’s a fluffy girlie girl who likes clothes and cupcakes. Oh, but wait, she is spending her weekends doing hardware electronics.’
All too often, technology is treated as a silver bullet for perceived problems in education. This sometimes leads to knee-jerk investments, using scarce resources to invest in software or hardware without a clear notion of how either might actually empower learning.
Technology is changing so fast that investment in hardware is getting riskier everyday. On the other hand, whether it is traditional computers or smart gadgets which are part of the convergence technologies of the future, some planning of hardware needs is still important.
Influence is best measured not only by military hardware and GDP, but also by other people’s perceptions that we, the United States, are using our power legitimately. That belief – that we are acting in the interests of the global commons and in accordance with the rule of law – is what the military would call a ‘force multiplier.’
We are not intimidated by the size of the armies, or the type of hardware the US has brought.
With our next generation hardware, polygon rendering will probably be an area we’ll get more heavily into.
I think that the most beautiful thing lately hasn’t been in hardware or software per se but collaboration – the idea behind Napster, which uses the distributed power of the Internet as its engine.
I don’t worry about great visuals that they showed that weren’t actually running on real hardware. It doesn’t matter. Gamers don’t make their purchase decisions based on movies that were shown in May for products that come out in March.
My background is in hardware design. I found hardware work to be a welcome change from thousands of hours of programming and that led to the designs you mentioned.
If I was designing a web site for elementary school children, I might have a much higher percentage of older computers with outdated browsers since keeping up with browser and hardware technology has not traditionally been a strong point of most elementary schools.
Thompson and Ritchie were among the first to realize that hardware and compiler technology had become good enough that an entire operating system could be written in C, and by 1978 the whole environment had been successfully ported to several machines of different types.
Eric S. Raymond
I also taught myself how to blow glass using a propane torch from the hardware store and managed to make some elementary chemistry plumbing such as tees and small glass bulbs.
Robert B. Laughlin
So when we go into a large hardware bid, there is usually a services component that is part of that. So as we enter these deals, we tend to talk about the capabilities and what else needs to be done, and from there the bid might expand beyond hardware to the services.
It’s more about conception and touch and spirit and soul than whether my hardware was in place.
You were up at 5 o’clock in the morning, and then you’d ride in a caravan, because we didn’t have big movie trucks or trailers that is the hardware of a movie camp.
I might not come home with hardware, but I’m winning.
We know that defence work results in more than great defence hardware – it can drive innovation and advances in all areas of our life.
I think there is an immense charm and humanity about the Bollywood structure, probably in the way there was about Hollywood film in the ’30s and ’40s. Somehow they were less distracted about hardware, and more about production values and people, you know?
I always find myself stopping to write down ideas of things I’d like to make from computer hardware items to things new moms need – inventions to share with others to make their lives more fun or interesting or easy.
There are large cooperatives all across this country. Land O’Lakes is a $12 billion club functioning all across America. There are rural electric co-ops in 47 states. Ace Hardware is a cooperative.
I can’t go to the hardware store, cut a sheet in half and staple it to the window anymore. It doesn’t fly.
James Badge Dale
The whole hardware industry has experienced the phenomenon in which every time computers get cheaper, they appeal to a new set of users; every time they get more powerful, old customers upgrade.
I’m always surprised at how many people seem to like reading about what hardware and software I use.
By being able to write a genome and plug it into an organism, the software, if you will, changes the hardware.
The emergence of a hardware product from an African company marks a phase-change point for tech invention. The BRCK shows that great ideas can come from anywhere, that innovation comes from solving real problems with constrained resources.
Governments that invest billions in new hardware still find it hard to accept that they might benefit just as much from systematic innovation in such things as child development or cutting crime.
Technology no longer consists just of hardware or software or even services, but of communities. Increasingly, community is a part of technology, a driver of technology, and an emergent effect of technology.
The hardware business is all about per-unit manufacturing cost and functionality. The services business is less asset-intensive and more dependent on people.
Anne M. Mulcahy
Google did a great job hacking the Web to create search – and then monetizing search with advertising. And Apple did a great job humanizing hardware and software so that formerly daunting computers and applications could become consumer-friendly devices – even a lifestyle brand.
The reason why Apple computers have worked so well over time is that, unlike Microsoft, they don’t bend over backward to be compatible with every piece of hardware or software in the digital universe. To code or create for Apple, you follow Apple’s rules. If you’re even allowed to.
What makes a great standalone piece of hardware is not the same thing as what makes a great networking device. One can work as an essentially closed system. The other is absolutely dependent on its openness.
Technology has moved away from sharing and toward ownership. This suits software and hardware companies just fine: They create new, bloated programs that require more disk space and processing power. We buy bigger, faster computers, which then require more complex operating systems, and so on.
Talking about Apple v. Microsoft without mentioning the Internet and the browser is like talking about WWII without talking about the nuke. Framing the conversation just in terms of open v. closed operating systems, the quality of the hardware or software or who the CEO was, is silly.
There will be an end point to how good TV pictures can get. The boob tube has hugely benefited from the rapid advance of digital electronics. Consequently, the strategy for hardware has changed. In the old days, sets had to be as simple as Elmer Fudd to keep them inexpensive. All the technical ‘smarts’ were at the transmitter end.
The era during which only governments could put hardware on the Moon is coming to an end. There are 26 private teams competing for the $30 million Google Lunar X-Prize – to be awarded for sending a robotic spacecraft to this nearby world that can roam at least 500 meters, and send back data such as a photo.
Consider: Life arose on Earth close to four billion years ago. Four billion years of slithering, swimming, and soaring life forms. But only in the last 200 thousand years has a species arisen that can fathom the laws of nature and build hardware able to signal its presence.
I don’t care how much hardware you throw at an audience. If they are not emotionally invested in the thing, it’s zero. I can name a slew of films, but I have no ax to grind. I understand the commerce of Hollywood probably better than anyone.
Google has the business resources, global scale and platform reach to accelerate Nest growth across hardware, software and services for the home globally.
For systems in which you already have a lot of hardware and software, change is difficult. That’s why apps are so popular.
To jump-start our economy, we must leave cash in your hands – because if you’ve got money in your pocket, you’ll spend it at the hardware store or the corner market, and that will drive job growth in our private sector.
CloudShield did not see itself as a cloak-and-dagger company. It made its name for high-end hardware that could peer deeply into Internet traffic and pull out and analyze ‘packets’ of data as they flew by.
I don’t use any real vintage hardware any longer. That’s always been the object as far as gaining control of the studio environment, going back to when I built my first studio, Secret Sound, in New York City. The whole point was to not have to pay studio bills anymore and not be looking at the clock.
I’m trying to build a brand, so I can sell Keyshawn Johnson products in stores. You know, paint, rugs, carpet, drapery, fabrics, blankets, towels, hardware, plates.
At a certain point, the services that you build around the hardware become more important than the hardware itself.
There’s this fabulous innovation ship called Unreasonable at Sea, where I’m a mentor. One of the companies there was called Protei, and they’re an open hardware ocean exploration and monitoring idea.
